Overview
Hakkari is a city and district seat in Hakkari Province in Turkey’s far southeast. Formerly known as Julamerk, it sits at high elevation in a rugged mountain region close to the Iraq-Turkey border.
The city has long been a Kurdish-majority center with deep historical roots.

Hakkari’s history reflects the region’s longstanding Kurdish and Assyrian presence. The city is also associated with early Kurdish literary traditions.
Sites and Landmarks
The Hakkari kurgan stelae, discovered in 1998, are rare Iron Age carved stones from the region and are now displayed in the Van Museum.
Notable People
Evdilsemede Babek, an early Kurdish poet, was born in Hakkari.
