Overview

Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey and one of the largest endorheic lakes in the region. Its highly alkaline, saline waters support unique ecosystems, including the endemic pearlfish (Inci kefali).

The lake’s shores include historic settlements and islands, reflecting its long cultural history.

Landscape and Culture

The lake sits within a volcanic basin bordered by mountains, with dramatic seasonal color changes. Akdamar Island is well known for its medieval Armenian church and cultural heritage.
