Overview
Mount Cilo (Cilo Dağı) forms the highest part of the Cilo Mountains in Hakkari and contains Turkey’s largest glaciers. The massif is one of the most rugged and remote mountain regions in the country.
Its high peaks and deep valleys create a dramatic alpine landscape, with snowfields and glacial meltwater feeding streams that descend toward the Zap basin.
Landscape and Culture
The mountain is closely linked to seasonal herding and highland travel in Kurdish areas of Hakkari. It also represents a major symbol of the region’s mountain identity.
Notes
Glacier retreat has made the Cilo range an important site for climate and environmental studies.
