Overview
Sulaymaniyah is a major city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the capital of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, surrounded by the Azmar, Goizha, and Qaiwan mountains. The modern city was founded in 1784 by Ibrahim Pasha Baban and served as the capital of the Baban principality.
The city is known for its cultural and educational institutions and remains an important center of Kurdish intellectual life.
History and Culture
Founded as a new capital for the Baban emirate, Sulaymaniyah grew quickly as a commercial and cultural hub. Its literary traditions and arts scene continue to shape Kurdish culture.
Sites and Landmarks
The Sulaymaniyah Museum houses archaeological collections from prehistoric to Ottoman periods. The city also features the Amna Suraka museum and the Great Mosque of Sulaymaniyah, founded by Ibrahim Pasha Baban.

The Kurdish poet Sherko Bekas was born in Sulaymaniyah and is widely regarded as a founder of contemporary Kurdish poetry.
