Overview

Sanandaj is the capital of Kurdistan Province in western Iran, set at the foot of Mount Abidar. The city is predominantly Kurdish and has long served as a regional administrative and cultural center.

The modern city was founded in 1636-37 by Soleyman Khan Ardalan and became the capital of the Ardalan principality.

History and Culture

Sanandaj has a fortress built during Abbasid rule, and its economy has historically included carpet making, woodworking, and metalwork. These crafts continue to shape local identity.

Sites and Landmarks

Khosro Abad Mansion, a Zand- and Qajar-era complex built in 1808, is one of the city’s best-known historic buildings and now serves as a museum.
